The Truth About Color Theory

People decide whether or not they like a product in 90 seconds or less.

90% of that decision is based solely on color. Learn how understanding the fundamentals of color theory can help you make the most intentional design choices for your space.

Fundamentals of Color Theory

Identify The Principles

Color theory embodies various principles such as shade, tint, tone, and temperature to harmonize colors, more commonly referred to hues within the design world.

Color Psychology

By combining different shades, tints, and tones of a single hue (color) or incorporating multiple colors within your home, you can create effects that evoke emotions and convey a message.

Color Temperature

From soft pinks to rich navies and muted yellows, this trio of spaces shows how color temperature shapes mood. Cool tones soothe, warm shades invite, and neutrals tie it all together, proving that contrast, when balanced, brings depth and character to any room.

Our guide to choosing Interior colors

Start with a color wheel to explore combinations and see what works.

Learn the difference between tints (lighter versions) and shades (darker versions) of colors.

Choose colors purposely, as each will influence the mood of the space.

Using various tones of a single color can help create a calm, cohesive look.

Don’t overdo one color as too much of the same can feel overpowering.

Mix primary and secondary colors in a way that feels balanced and pleasing to the eye.

If bold color(s) isn’t your thing, don’t overlook neutrals.

Add warmth with wood tones, create contrast with black or gray elements, or soften a space with whites.

Consider natural and artificial lighting, colors may shift depending on it.

Darker shades in dimly lit areas can make the space feel heavier and in turn, feel smaller.

Lastly, try the 60-30-10 rule.

Dedicate 60% of the room to a main color, 30% to a secondary color, and 10% to an accent shade for a well-rounded palette.
